handles

I just ordered some handles for the main piece. I realized yesterday there was no where to hold onto when moving it. These handles should do the trick. I ordered two, one for each side.

almost done with the first peice

The first piece is almost finished. We worked on it a few hours today. I finally got some pics. for you. (below) As you see we have a little cherry left to put on the trim and we have to put the 3/4 inch piece on the top. I'm going to get a piece a glass cut this week so we can mount the Emperor Axis picture. You can see it in the pics. below but its not fastened yet. I think the drawers turned out real nice.
Remember now this is the far right piece. The printer will sit on this one. We are going to work on the main piece next and then finally the far left piece. I hope it all works out the way I want it too. It sure is taking us long enough.

Started Covering

We got the last drawer in the first piece mounted last Saturday. Then we cut a piece of the cherry and mounted it on the side of the piece. We cut the cherry a little big and then we sanded it down to the size we wanted. If all goes well, I should be able to snap some pics next time we work.

Drawers built

Last Friday which was the day after thanksgiving,a long 4 day weekend, we built one drawer.
Yesterday we got that one mounted and the other one built. All we have to do now is mount that one and we can start covering it.
Also I didn't like the idea of the drawers being plywood that wasn't cherry, so I went to Lowes and picked up some shelf liner to cover the ugly plywood.

Picture

I have been working on a picture to have blown up and displayed on my desk. Here's what I have come up with so far. Any suggestions on the best way to display it? I could just glue it, or maybe press it between two pieces of glass. I want it to have the shiny, glossy look. Any ideas?
I don't think we will work on the desk this weekend, Dad is working. He wants to pick one piece and finish it instead of working on all three at once. I have agreed and decided to work on the right hand piece first. It's the one the picture will be on. It shouldn't take too long too finish it once we get at it. We just have to build two drawers and mount them, then we can cover it with the cherry and mount the picture. Then I will up a picture of that piece to you.
Oh I got my knobs and cup holder in, also the CD holders. All I like is the lights.

Cup holder

I just ordered a cup holder...the black one. I found it on ebay.
http://www.ebay.com/
If I like it and decide to, we will build it into the desk. I could use it for drinks or even pencils, scissors and the like.

Wired

Last Saturday we got the desk wired for electricity. We also made some small modifications to the frame.

This is not the color. I ordered it in the black with cherry wash. I hope it matches the desk. I chose a lizard in honor of the Late Great Jim Morrison.
I have discovered they also have a blog at blogspot:

Built 2 drawers

Well we finally built 2 of the drawers for the desk. They go into the piece to the far left. We built them for CD storage. We built them around 3 onyx CD towers.
http://www.atlantic-inc.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=1261
We will have to cut one in half so we will have one and a half in each drawer. The drawers fit one on top of the other. We were short on room so we had to change some twobyes to onebyes on the frame so that they would fit the way we wanted. Of coarse the towers will have to be laid down but it should work perfect.
I also ordered some lights
https://www.asseenontvnetwork.com/quikbrites/
To put in all my drawers. They are suppose to come on when you open the drawer and go off when you close it. It should be a nice feature.
I know I keep promising pictures but be patient.

Finished Framing

Well, again. its taking longer then estimated. I've been sick and Dad's been busy too but we finally finished framing the final piece today. The next step is to build 4 drawers and 2 shelves into the inner body of the two side pieces and to also do the wiring. Then we can start covering. After that I will show you some pics. Don't get in too big of a hurry for them though. We still have to stain and put a finish on it. So until next time.

Framing

Just to let everyone know (not that I really believe people read these blogs other then the creator) that we have started the desk. We worked on it 9-3,4, and 10. I know I said I would up pics. as we went but we are still in the framing stage. You don't want to see the ugly frame so I will wait to post pics. when the thing starts looking like its suppose to.
We have the main piece and one of the side pieces framed. So just one more side piece to go and the electrical wiring then we can start covering it. Oh I don't believe I've told you we are building it in 3 pieces and are putting electrical outlets into the desk. We also have a channel running through it to hide all them nasty looking PC wires ( you know the usb and the ps2, etc.)
I'm estimating 2 or 3 more weeks till we get to the actual cherry wood. I'll have you some pics. then.

Trip to Saint Louis

Yesturday my Dad and I made the 500 mile roundtrip to Saint Louis to buy some cherry wood.
We got it at the woodshop.(pictured above) http://www.woodnshop.com/default.htm . Boy they sure have some pretty stuff.
I bought: one 4x8 sheet of 3/4 inch cherry plywood,
two 4x8 sheets of 1/4 inch cherry plywood,
three 3/4 inch planks of cherry wood at various Lengths and widths,
and 50 feet of 7/8 cherry veneer for edging.
I'm sure we are going to need more cherry, but this will be enough to get us started. If your ever in Saint Louis be sure to stop by the woodshop. Tell em Emp Axis sent you.

I am Emperor Axis!

Welcome to my blog . I am: Emperor Axis !
I have created this blog because I am about to build (or help my Father build) a new computer desk that I have designed. We will begin sometime in the near future and I will keep you updated on our progress. I will then begin to build a new computer. I am currently using a computer I built about three years ago but I won't go into a great detail about this one, although it is still a powerhouse.
I am wanting to put top dollar in both the desk and computer but will cut corners in places. The desk I plan on being made of cherry wood. I am hoping to start on it in a couple of weeks. Why not sooner? Because we have to figure how much wood we need. This takes a lot of planning...
